Student Chapter Information Henderson State University to Start APICS Student Chapter The School of Business at Henderson State University will soon initiate an APICS student chapter that will be affiliated with the First Arkansas APICS Chapter, according to Dr. Ken Green, Jr. who will serve as advisor to the new group. Dr. Green has been promoting the student chapter for several months and expects to have 15 to 20 students involved by mid-October. Michael Peters, the first recipient of the FARK APICS student scholarship, will coordinate the organizing efforts for the student chapter. All business students at HSU take a production and operations course as part of the business core and participate in a manufacturing simulation as part of the required capstone course in strategic management. While all HSU business students are exposed to the theories and practices associated with production and operations management in an academic setting, they generally have little real-world exposure. Formation of the student chapter will afford students the much needed opportunities to "rub elbows" with production and inventory control practitioners. "Our students are excited about the educational and employment opportunities offered through the FARK APICS chapter," said Dr. Green. In addition, Dr. Green and members of the student chapter expect to participate in APICS-related research projects. Projects that investigate the impact of JIT-selling and JIT-II-selling strategies on organizational performance are currently underway. Upcoming projects will focus on the use of a Total-JIT approach to support supply chain management efforts. Total-JIT includes the traditional JIT-manufacturing, JIT-purchasing and JIT-design strategies as well as the newly developed JIT-marketing and JIT-information strategies. Dr. Green and the students will be asking for help from APICS members to complete the projects. Dr. Ken Green, Jr. is an assistant professor of management at Henderson State University. He can be reached by phone at 870-230-5018 or by e-mail at greenk@hsu.edu. Please contact him if you have questions or comments related to formation of the student chapter or the student research efforts. APICS Student Chapter Formed at Henderson State University The APICS student chapter at HSU is now active. It is one of only two student chapters in Arkansas. Ken Green is advisor to the student chapter that now has 16 student members. Michael Peters, the first recipient of the FARK APICS student scholarship, serves as President and Candice Forthman serves as Treasurer of the chapter. In addition to support and direction throughout the chapter formation process, FARK provided much needed financial support in the form of a check for the first year's dues. In October, eight of the student members got their first opportunity to "rub elbows" with FARK members at their first APICS sponsored professional development meeting (PDM) in Hot Springs. The students met and visited with APICS members from the Little Rock and Hot Springs areas and toured the Chem-Fab plant in Hot Springs. The PDM was a valuable experience for the students and faculty members attending. All were amazed at the complexity and capability of the manufacturing processes at Chem-Fab. The 16 student chapter members are listed below. Thanks again to the FARK chapter for supporting this special group of HSU business students.
